At any of these levels there is a need for tools that allow the influence of design parameters in the behavior of the circuits to be clearly shown to the students. This paper presents a software tool, namely SCMOS, that allows the functional characteristics of an analog MOS circuit (gain, bandwidth, etc.) and their variations due to the modification of design parameters (lengths and widths of transistors, parasitic capacitances, etc) to be checked. Different analyses (transients, AC and DC sweeps) can be performed and their results can be checked in the form of parametric curves, on which the correspondences between parameter variations and functional characteristic variations can be viewed. SCMOS allows a predefined set of topologies, ranging from single-transistor stages to operational amplifiers, to be studied but other topologies can be easily added.

Computer-Based Design of Analog Integrated CMOS-Circuits

In this paper a software design tool is presented that supports the designer in the development process of integrated MOS circuits. Here the general difficulty to find out the right parameter set of all devices in the circuit is split into small device-level tasks, so the designer is able to interactively compute proper W & L geometries of each single MOS-device. Starting with the common dilemm...

Modeling and Simulation of Substrate Noise in Mixed-Signal Circuits Applied to a Special VCO

The mixed-signal circuits with both analog and digital blocks on a single chip have wide applications in communication and RF circuits. Integrating these two blocks can cause serious problems especially in applications requiring fast digital circuits and high performance analog blocks. Fast switching in digital blocks generates a noise which can be introduced to analog circuits by the common su...

Behavioral Modeling and Simulation of Semiconductor Devices and Circuits Using VHDL-AMS

During the past few years, a lot of work has been done on behavioral models and simulation tools. But a need for modeling strategy still remains. The VHDL-AMS language supports the description of analog electronic circuits using Ordinary Differential Algebraic Equations (ODAEs), in addition to its support for describing discrete-event systems. For VHDL-AMS to be useful to the analog design ...

Project 1: Circuit properties of MOS transistors

Introduction: There are two types of MOS transistors, pMOS and nMOS, which are usually employed as digital switches to implement some Boolean functions. Although the MOS transistors are treated conceptually as digital devices that have logical values either “true” or “false”, they are intrinsically analog devices whose node voltage and branch current are real numbers. Thus, in order to make bes...
